We Are Alive at the Tipping Point

For three hundred thousand years, a human life was roughly the same shape as the one before it. The same dawns. The same hunger. The same gods, more or less, and the same approximate explanations for the weather. A peasant in 800 AD and a peasant in 800 BC would have understood each other's days in a way neither would understand ours.

That is over. We are alive at the tipping point.

Intelligence is becoming abundant. Energy is becoming abundant. The two forces that bottlenecked every human ambition are coming loose at the same time.

You can feel this without knowing the numbers. The rate at which capability arrives now is not the rate at which institutions move. The rate at which capability arrives is not the rate at which old jobs retire and new ones become legible. It does not say abundance is inevitable. It does not say collapse is inevitable. It says only that the steady-state assumption — that next year looks like last year, plus or minus a percent — has lost its grip. Variance widens. Tails get fat. That is the only reliable statement about the next twenty years that costs nothing to make.

Why this matters for your week

The temptation, when you read essays like this, is to treat the curve as cosmic. Something happening to civilizations, somewhere over the horizon, on nobody's particular Tuesday. It is not. The curve is the reason your job description is unstable. It is the reason the rules your parents used to plan their thirties no longer fit the room you are standing in. It is at your door already.
